Thermallake
“There is a lake in Hungary, bathing in it makes all kinds of suffering disappear.”, wrote a Finnish author.
This lake is unique, the creator has blessed it with wonderful water, peaceful and rich scenery.
Romans, Huns, Turks, they all used the thermal source in the past millennia in order to maintain or restore their health.
Count Festetics made the place expand to a spa in 1795 by building serveral bath and treatment (cure) houses.
The thermal lake of Héviz is the largest natural and biologically active thermal lake in the world. The area of the thermal lake covers 4,44 ha and it has an oval shape.
Water gushes from a source crater just on the north side of the lake and is 38.5 m deep by today's data. The source is at 410 1/s so rich that the water changes completely within 48 hours.
The thermal water contains valuable noble gases, mineral salts as potassium, trace elements and hydrocarbonates which have analgesic and anti – inflammatory effect.
What makes the lake so special, apart from it curing effects, is its turf mud bottom. The mud won from the bottom of the lake and which is mainly vegetable origin with a high heating (warming) capacity and high radon levels is used for mud packs.
The Hévizer swimmers know from experience that the depth of the water varies between 150 and 200cm in 2/3 of the lake. Near the bath house one can stand on the bottom of the lake or bury oneself up to the thigh in the warm turf mud.
The water temperature in summer is usually between 32-36° C and during the moderately servere winter it drops to 23-26° C. These temperatures make bathing in the open possible the whole year around.
The spa was built between 1964 and 1968. It was lastly structurally renewed in 2006.
A bath house with large glass surfaces has been created specially for the winter through the reconstruction work. New dressing rooms have also been created on the banks of the lake.
A new medical unit with water treatment has been developed. The services have been enhanced by restaurants and a wellness department.
There is also an area with paddling pool and playground for the children.
After reconstruction works the spa is waiting for the guests offering expanded services and a greater winter capacity.
All roads lead to the lake in Héviz…
This is no coincidence, since the settlement was named after the lake and it became famous through it becoming a famous European spa town.
